In the realm of theatre, where storytelling takes center stage, the play 'Cry/Laugh' emerges as a curious blend of medieval allegory and modern commentary. This production, set in a world of dragons and taxes, delves into the lives of two seemingly disparate characters: the town crier and the jester. But what makes this piece truly intriguing is its exploration of the power dynamics between those who wield influence and those who are left to bear the brunt of it. As the curtain rises, we find ourselves in a world where the town crier, played by James Peake, is burdened by the weight of bad news. His role, though seemingly important, is fleeting and disposable, much like the fleeting nature of his news. On the other hand, the jester, portrayed by Morven Blackadder, finds herself in a similar predicament. Once a trusted confidant of the king, she is now tasked with an impossible mission, one that highlights the absurdity of her current situation. What makes 'Cry/Laugh' particularly captivating is the way it mirrors our own modern-day struggles. The town crier and the jester, in their own ways, represent the tech overlords and the average peasant. The former, like the town crier, are often seen as dispensable, while the latter, like the jester, are left to navigate a world where their voices are not heard. The play's narrative structure, however, leaves something to be desired. The meandering story and absurdist twists, while adding a layer of humor, fail to articulate the political intent of the piece. The actors, despite their best efforts, struggle to draw out the clownish joviality, leaving the audience with a sense of unease. Dhanak, the playwright, seems more interested in the mechanics of a joke than in the deeper implications of power and accountability. In my opinion, 'Cry/Laugh' is a missed opportunity. While it raises interesting questions about the nature of power and the role of the individual in a hierarchical society, it fails to deliver a compelling narrative. The production, directed by Ben Standish and Brian Logan, is a lunchtime treat, but it leaves the audience wanting more. Perhaps the playwright could have delved deeper into the psychological and cultural implications of the town crier and the jester's situations. What makes this piece truly fascinating is the way it reflects our own modern-day struggles, where the voices of the average peasant are often overlooked. In my view, 'Cry/Laugh' is a play that could have been a powerful commentary on the nature of power and the role of the individual in society. Instead, it leaves the audience with a sense of unease and a longing for a more focused and compelling narrative.
